NEW YORK – During last night’s primary contest here, Republican victor Donald Trump gave a victory speech claiming the GOP conspired against him, but the plain truth is primary voters have given a majority of delegates to other candidates. “It’s a system that is rigged,” Trump said. “Even though we’re leading by a lot and it’s impossible to catch us, nobody should claim victory unless they get those delegates with voters and voting and that’s what’s going to happen, you watch.”Trump’s assertion, like so many others, simply isn’t true. Trump has won 845 delegates to date, but he has lost 893 to other candidates. Simple math, 893 is more than 845. To his favor, Trump has won far more delegates in New York on a proportional basis (94 percent, or 89 delegates) than the percentage of his popular victory (61 percent). Gov. John Kasich won just 3 percent of the delegates despite winning 25 percent of the popular vote. Sen. Ted Cruz won zero delegates, despite winning almost 15 percent of the popular vote.
