Yesterday on the campaign trail in Wisconsin, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had harsh words for Republicans who don’t support Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee for Supreme Court. She tied the nominee’s fate (and future nominees) on key policy outcomes, such as whether gay rights and the Affordable Care Act would remain intact.Yet she didn’t mention that Justice Anthony Kennedy, the swing vote last year supporting gay marriage, was nominated by former Republican President Ronald Reagan. She also didn’t mention that the swing vote to save the Affordable Care Act was Chief Justice John Roberts, a man nominated by former Republican President George W. Bush. Clinton hammered Republicans for “obstructionism” and “disregard for the rule of law,” yet didn’t seem to acknowledge that key SCOTUS policy decisions that she favors were enabled because of those same “obstructionists.” I support gay marriage, but only some elements of ObamaCare, so that second ruling was a disappointment for myself and many other conservatives.Clinton also hammered Republican candidate Donald Trump (of whom I am no fan) for launching the anti-Obama “birther” movement questioning the President’s citizenship. Yet multiple press accounts suggest this narrative started with Clinton supporters (or possibly the Clinton campaign itself) during the bruising 2008 presidential race.Watch our Meet The Press…
