Dear Trump Supporters, Do Facts Even Matter Anymore?

If you speak with a self-described “conservative” supporter of GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, you are likely to find that he or she is incredibly forgiving of ways that he deviates from mainstream conservative ideals. Whether seeking trade deals that would jack up costs for consumers, bestowing moral equivalence the terrorist group Hamas and Israel, giving faux deficit reduction plans that would do nothing of the sort or donating tens of thousands of dollars to liberal Democrats (just to name a few), it is astonishing how so many grassroots conservatives give a free pass to Trump unlike any they offered, for example, Mitt Romney.It’s clear that Trump’s appeal is to the gut, not the head. As Manhattan Institute Scott Winship points out at National Review, Trump’s support is not about the economy, either:“Trump performed no better in states where the economy was the biggest issue than in other states.
