Recently, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with a group of prominent conservatives after recent reports revealed that the tech giant suppressed conservative content from appearing in the “Trending Topics” sidebar next to users’ primary news feeds.Among the conservative leaders and commentators attending the meeting at Facebook’s corporate headquarters in Menlo Park, California, were American Enterprise Institute President Arthur Brooks, S.E. Cupp from CNN, Fox News commentator and former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino and Glenn Beck of The Blaze.“I [went] into the meeting with an open mind,” Perino told me. “Facebook says its policy does not allow for suppression of conservative news in the news trends feature; but the accusations that that was happening are so serious that the company knows it has to be addressed quickly and thoroughly.”A report published earlier this month at the tech-news site Gizmodo alleged that Facebook used a team of editors to choose trending stories, rather than a neutral, computer-based algorithm. Former editors claimed they suppressed trending stories from conservative publications or events such as the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).“When you wield so much power, you have a choice to make whether you’ll be inclusive of all diversity, beyond race and gender,” Perino said.…
